What is a CSS Beautifier?

You grab some CSS from a browser's DevTools inspector, or copy a stylesheet from a third-party library — and it's a wall of unreadable compressed text. A CSS Beautifier formats that raw or minified code into a clean, indented structure that's actually possible to work with. The MDN CSS reference describes every property and value; CSS-Tricks is great for real-world patterns. Beautifying doesn't change how the CSS behaves — it just adds whitespace and line breaks that browsers ignore. The W3C CSS specification defines what's valid CSS regardless of formatting.

The same tool can also minify CSS — dropping comments along with the whitespace and characters a browser doesn't need, so the stylesheet ships smaller and loads faster in production. For a complete reference of all CSS properties and syntax, W3Schools CSS and the CSS Wikipedia article are handy starting points.

How to Use the CSS Beautifier

1

Paste your CSS code

Copy your CSS from a stylesheet, browser DevTools, or any other source and paste it into the input editor.

2

Choose Beautify or Minify mode

Select Beautify to format the CSS with proper indentation, or Minify to compress it for production use. The output updates automatically.

3

Copy or download the result

The Copy button puts the result on your clipboard; Download hands you a .css file you can drop back into your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the CSS beautifier validate my code?

The beautifier formats your CSS structurally but does not validate it against the CSS specification. Use a CSS Validator for full validation.

Will beautifying CSS change how it works?

No. Beautifying only changes whitespace and formatting — the rules, selectors, and property values remain identical.

Does the minifier remove CSS comments?

Yes. The minifier strips all /* ... */ comments along with unnecessary whitespace to reduce file size.

Can I use this for SCSS or LESS?

The tool processes standard CSS syntax. While some SCSS/LESS may work, for best results use a dedicated SCSS or LESS formatter.
