What Is SHA-224?
SHA-224 is a cryptographic hash function that belongs to the SHA-2 family. It produces a 224-bit (28-byte) hash value, rendered as a 56-character hexadecimal string. SHA-224 is essentially a truncated version of SHA-256 with different initial hash values.
SHA-224 was defined in RFC 3874 and is commonly used when a shorter hash is needed while still maintaining strong cryptographic properties. It provides 112 bits of collision resistance, making it suitable for many security applications.
How to Use This Tool
Enter Your Text
Put the input in the left editor, typed or pasted. If you just want to see it work, Sample fills in a test string; Upload takes the contents of a .txt file instead.
View the Hash
The right panel instantly displays the SHA-224 hash of your input as a 56-character hexadecimal string.
Copy or Download
The SHA-224 digest is 56 hex characters. Copy places it on the clipboard; if you would rather keep a record, Download gives you a .txt file holding the digest.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is SHA-224 different from SHA-256?
SHA-224 and SHA-256 use the same compression function, but SHA-224 starts with different initial hash values and truncates the final output to 224 bits (7 words) instead of 256 bits (8 words). For more details, see the Crypto++ SHA-224 documentation.
Is SHA-224 secure?
Yes, SHA-224 provides 112 bits of collision resistance, which is considered secure for most applications. It is approved by NIST as part of the SHA-2 standard.
Is the text I enter uploaded for hashing?
No. The SHA-224 calculation is plain JavaScript in this page, so the input stays on your computer.
Can I verify SHA-224 results?
Yes, you can verify results against known test vectors. Many languages support SHA-224 natively, such as Ruby's Digest module which includes SHA-224 alongside SHA-256.
