JSON Input

TOON Output

What Is JSON to TOON?

TOON , short for Token-Oriented Object Notation, declares field names once and drops most of the quotes and braces JSON repeats on every record, so the same data costs fewer tokens when it goes into an LLM prompt or a tight context window. The JSON specification defines the source format.

Paste JSON on the left and the TOON version appears on the right. The encoding happens inside this tab, so your payload never travels to a server. The result is aimed at prompts and API calls where every token counts. Going the other way? Use TOON to JSON.

How to Use This Tool

1

Paste or Upload JSON

Start by pasting JSON on the left, or pick a .json or .txt file with Upload. Sample fills in a small subscriber list to experiment with, and malformed JSON gets flagged with an error message rather than converted.

2

Review the TOON Output

The right panel shows the converted TOON. The structure is preserved; the output uses fewer tokens than equivalent JSON. For formatting JSON first, use the JSON Formatter.

3

Copy or Download

Use Copy or Download. For formatting JSON first, use the JSON Formatter. For validation, use the JSON Validator.

When JSON to TOON Helps

When sending structured data to LLMs, AI APIs, or token-limited systems, every token counts. TOON reduces token usage compared to JSON. The RFC 8259 defines JSON. If your source data is JSON (e.g. from an API, config file, or database), converting here gives you compact TOON for prompts and AI inputs.

RAG pipelines, tool-calling schemas, and structured output formats often benefit from TOON. Converting JSON config or schema to TOON before sending to an LLM can save tokens and improve response quality. For pulling out specific values from large JSON first, use jq.

Frequently Asked Questions

When to use TOON?

When you need to send structured data to LLMs and want to minimize token usage. TOON is more compact than JSON. Use JSON for general APIs; use TOON for AI and token-limited contexts.

Is my data private?

Yes. The JSON-to-TOON encoding is done by script on this page, with no request leaving the tab. Keep DevTools open on the Network panel while you convert and you will see nothing go out.

How much smaller is TOON?

TOON typically uses fewer tokens than JSON due to shorter syntax. The exact savings depend on the data. For nested structures and large payloads, the difference can be significant.

Can I convert TOON back to JSON?

Yes. Use the TOON to JSON tool. The conversion is lossless in both directions.

Does it work with all JSON?

Yes. Standard JSON objects, arrays, strings, numbers, and booleans convert to TOON. The structure is preserved. Invalid JSON will show an error.
