What Is CSS to SCSS?

You're working on a project that uses SCSS, but the CSS you just got from a design tool or legacy codebase is completely flat. Manually nesting those selectors takes forever and you'll inevitably miss something. This converter analyzes your CSS selector relationships and restructures them into properly nested SCSS. The W3C CSS specifications define the input format, while the Sass documentation covers the output syntax.

The nesting is worked out by script in this tab, so a stylesheet you are not allowed to share never gets uploaded, and what comes back is SCSS a Sass compiler will accept. For the reverse (SCSS to CSS), use SCSS to CSS. For Less, use CSS to Less.

How to Use This Tool

1

Paste or Upload CSS

Put the flat stylesheet in the left pane by pasting it or opening a .css file through Upload. Sample loads some selectors that share parents, which is the case nesting is built for. Broken CSS gets an error message instead of SCSS.

2

Review the SCSS Output

Nested SCSS shows up on the right. Selectors may be nested where structure allows. You can add variables and mixins manually after conversion.

3

Copy or Download

When it looks right, Copy it into your partial or Download a file. Compile the SCSS with SCSS to CSS to verify. For formatting CSS first, use the CSS Formatter.

When CSS to SCSS Helps

When migrating a project from plain CSS to SCSS, or when you have CSS from a design export and want to integrate it into an SCSS-based codebase (e.g. Bootstrap 4+, Foundation), this conversion provides a starting point. Build tools like webpack and Vite compile SCSS. The output gives you nested structure you can refine with variables and mixins.

Design tools like Figma often export plain CSS. Converting to SCSS here lets you add it to a component-based structure. For Less instead, use CSS to Less. For vendor prefixes, use the CSS Prefixer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert CSS to SCSS?

Paste the stylesheet on the left or open a .css file, and selectors like .nav .item get folded under their parent block for you. That rewrite happens inside your browser, so the CSS is not uploaded. The output follows the SCSS syntax specification.

Does it add SCSS variables or mixins automatically?

No. The converter focuses on nesting structure — turning flat CSS selectors into nested SCSS. It doesn't extract repeated values into $variables or create @mixin patterns. You can add those manually after conversion. Check the Sass variables docs for guidance.

Is my CSS safe when using this tool?

Yes. Restructuring the selectors is done locally by the page's own script, so a proprietary theme or a production stylesheet stays on your computer the whole time.

Should I use SCSS or Less for my project?

SCSS (Sass) is the more widely adopted preprocessor — it's used by Bootstrap 4+, most modern frameworks, and has broader tooling support. Less is used by Bootstrap 3 and Ant Design. For new projects, SCSS is generally the safer bet.
